Tierre Group is committed to the environment, not only by promoting the benefits of products such as water purifiers, which encourage a reduction in plastic use, but also by selecting partners who are particularly attentive to these issues.
Today, we want to talk to you about the NetZeroCarbon initiative by Kuehne+Nagel, the company to which we entrust the majority of our sea freight imports.
Kuehne+Nagel: zero carbon dioxide emissions since 2020
Starting in January 2020, all carbon dioxide emissions related to its LCL shipments are directly offset by Kuehne+Nagel, meaning they have a zero impact on the environment.
This initiative represents an important realization by the company: the logistics industry contributes 8% of global CO2 emissions, and Kuehne+Nagel, as a sector leader, is committed to reducing its own contribution to ensure a future for generations to come. Kuehne+Nagel’s is an important and responsible choice, which will serve as inspiration for many other companies around the world.
The goal of the NetZeroCarbon program
Kuehne+Nagel's goal is ambitious: to neutralize the CO2 emissions associated with the transport services offered to its customers by 2030.
The first step was the direct offsetting of CO2 emissions for all sea freight groupage shipments, but Kuehne+Nagel is not stopping there: its milestone can only be reached by cooperating with all stakeholders involved in the supply chain.
In fact, Kuehne+Nagel allows its customers to evaluate the eco-sustainability of a transport service through big data and predictive analytics, which form the basis of digital solutions that allow for identifying routes and transport modes aimed at reducing emissions.

Visibility
First and foremost, it is essential to know the extent of one's CO2 footprint across all stages of the supply chain.
For this reason, Kuehne+Nagel allows its customers to obtain reliable information on their emissions thanks to certified calculation methodologies.
SeaExplorer is the application dedicated to sea freight services, capable of supporting the customer in identifying and planning their transport services according to the criteria of eco-sustainability.
Reduction of environmental impact
Kuehne+Nagel’s multi-year plan includes multiple initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact:
The implementation of advanced technologies related to energy production via photovoltaic panels and waste disposal in all its logistics centers.
The use of renewable energy.
A continuous training program to maintain and strengthen the environmental awareness of employees.
The gradual replacement of business trips with video conferences.
Periodic emission checks at their locations
Compensation
Carbon dioxide offsetting is a certified process that allows companies and individuals to counterbalance those CO2 emissions that cannot currently be eliminated.
These emissions are offset by Kuehne+Nagel by contributing to environmental projects related to reforestation, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions globally.
One hectare of forest is capable of releasing 15-30 tons of oxygen per year and sequestering up to 10.6 tons of CO2. This CO2 reservoir must be protected by investing in the safeguarding of natural ecosystems such as forests, grasslands, and drainage systems.
In conclusion
Kuehne+Nagel’s neutralization plan is based on a mix of reduction and compensation. In addition to benefiting from transparency regarding CO2 emission data, the company operates based on an overall environmental protection program that provides for the reduction of electricity and water consumption, as well as waste recycling.
We at Tierre Group, always attentive to environmental issues, are pleased and proud to make our contribution to this important and ambitious project.
