The SCIP – “Substances of Concern In articles as such or in complex objects (Products)” – is the database through which ECHA – the European Chemicals Agency based in Helsinki – can ensure the availability of information on hazardous substances contained in articles and products throughout their entire life cycle, up to the disposal phase as waste.
This will not only allow operators involved in recovery activities and in the production of goods made from recycled materials to know the characteristics of the materials, but, pursuant to the REACH regulation, it will also help consumers to be informed about the substances of very high concern contained in the products they purchase. The information contained in the SCIP database can promote the substitution of SVHCs – “Substances of Very High Concern” – with safer alternatives in the production of articles and products, and foster the transition toward a circular economy by facilitating reuse, recycling, and recovery activities.
For TierreGroup, SCIP is an Obligation, a Challenge, and an Opportunity. It is the Obligation to notify the products placed on the market by collaborating with our suppliers for a "greener" supply chain, the Challenge of creating a robust process for controlling the hazardous substances present in our products, and the Opportunity to monitor the substances in our products and create a sustainable supply network, thereby managing both current and future regulatory obligations to improve our products and increase our corporate sustainability indicators.
At TierreGroup, we always work with an eye to the future, and so, even with this requirement deriving from Art. 33 of the REACH Directive, we like to think that our commitment to greater transparency regarding hazardous substances will help our children and the consumers of tomorrow live in a better world.
